Pasifika FAQs whilst studying

There’s no such thing as a silly question – but there are questions we get asked a lot. If you’re wondering about something, you might find the answer here.

I am a new student to Massey University, are there any orientation programmes that I can attend?

Before the start of Semester One and Two, Massey University runs orientation programmes – these include a Pasifika orientation, which is a great opportunity to meet other Pasifika students, and find out what’s happening.

Details of the Pasifika orientation will be available close to the start of the semester.

You can also contact the Pasifika Learning Advisors to find out more information about the Pasifika Orientation Programme.

Why should I attend the orientation programme?

If you are studying at Massey for the first time, or you are returning after taking some time off, we recommend that you attend the Pasifika orientation. You will find out important information that will help you make a great start, and you will also get to know some of the Pasifika support staff and other students who can share your experiences. It’s a great way to get to know people on and off campus.

I need help with an assignment. Who can I ask, and how?

A: Whether studying internally or via distance learning, you can get help with your assignments in a number of ways, but your first step should be to have a chat with your Pasifika Learning Advisor

B: If you study on campus, or live close to one of our campuses, you can arrange a face-to-face meeting with a Pasifika Learning Adviser. Or you can call, email, or arrange to have a Skype or Zoom meeting.

C: You can access the Massey University Online Writing and Learning Link (OWLL). This is where you can find various online tools and resources to help you with academic writing.

D: You can also access support and information from the Pasifika Stream page. Post a question on the Discussion Forum, and one of our advisers will respond within 24 hours.

I feel a bit overwhelmed with my workload and need to get an extension for my assignment. How do I sort this out?

A: Contact your course coordinator/lecturer in advance of the assignment’s due date to ask for an extension. Please note that it is important that you have a valid reason for requesting the extension.

B: Contact the Pasifika Learning Advisor for guidance, and an appointment to help you with your assignment.

We had a family bereavement and I need some time out, need an extension for my work or have exams coming up that I can’t deal with. Who can I ask for help with this?

A: Contact your course coordinators/lecturers to inform them of the bereavement. You can seek an extension on any assignments due.

B: If you have an exam, you can apply for an impaired/aegrotat performance.

C: Talk to the Pasifika Learning Advisors and/or Pasifika Student Advisers in your college.

I'm getting a bit stressed with study and everything. Who can I go to for help?
